Five die in harbour boat crash

Four young women and a man on an overcrowded boat have been killed and three others have been critically injured in a crash with a fishing trawler on sydney harbour.

The accident happened when the trawler and a smaller cruiser with 14 people on board collided near bradleys head, close North Face Sale:http://www.skyoga.co.uk/ to the taronga zoo, at about 2.45am(Aest).The cruiser was only licenced to carry eight people.

John mcpherson, the managing director of sydney ship repair and engineering, which owns the cruiser, has said spare keys were hidden on board, but only a staff member or someone familiar with the boat would find them.

“I have no idea who was on the boat,”He said.

Police have said the people on board the cruiser were on a”Social outing”But that investigations were continuing.Police would not comment on whether the cruiser’s lights were on or whether those on board were wearing life jackets.

Survivors were plucked from the water by people on passing vessels who rushed to help.The rescuers took the injured to the taronga zoo wharf and called in emergency services.

Witnesses have said there was”Chaos”At the wharf as rescuers and more than 50 emergency workers tried to help the injured in total darkness. “There was an eerie silence.Ambulance crews wrapped their arms around the survivors, trying to comfort them,”Said reporter lauren williams.

Hospital

A 30-Year-Old man had emergency surgery at the royal north shore hospital after suffering”Extremely significant injuries”To his head, according to a doctor.An 18-Year-Old woman and a 31-Year-Old man were in a serious condition in a”Resuscitation”Unit.

The other six people injured in the crash-Men aged 19, 21, 22, 24, 30 and 31-Were due to be released soon. “A lot of them are in a significant amount of shock.That time of the morning, being in the water for some time, some of them were quite cold,”An rnsh spokesman said.

Photos from the scene show a large hole on the left, rear side of the cruiser.The trawler was barely damaged and the two people on board were unharmed.

It has been reported that the trawler’s crew may not have realised there had been an accident and that police pulled it up as it approached north head, where the harbour meets the ocean.

Nsw police acting inspector tony bear said: “To the best of our knowledge all persons were plucked from the harbour in a very short period of time after the accident.

“There were a number of other vessels that did help out and did a very good job in helping those they were able to help back to shore. ”

Investigation

Mr mcpherson has told the daily telegraph that the company uses the cruiser to ferry its staff to work on goat island.He said none of his staff work overnight shifts and that all of them had been accounted for.

Both boats have been impounded by water police.

New south wales premier morris iemma has promised a full investigation into the”Shocking”Incident.

“I extend the condolences of the people of new south wales to those involved in this terrible accident-Especially family and friends waking this morning to shocking news,”He said. “I just am stunned by this.It’s just terrible news, and for the parents of those who have lost their lives this is just a terrible, terrible day,”He said on Channel Nine.
